    Is Google Abandoning Local Listings?

Why would Google not display local listings? While Google may never get rid of their local listings completely, recent changes to blended results on the SERP, the new maps experience, and an awarded patent might suggest they’re moving in another direction. Review Pop-up in Blended SERP Results A recent change first reported by Andrew Shotland, organic results that display a...

Hmmm, Alex, you make some good points. This could explain some things and almost makes some sense.

I sure hope G+ L pages aren't going away or being hidden and minimized, but that does almost seem like the direction things are moving in.

Thanks for plugging the post Linda!

I personally don't believe the local listings are going away but I do see the possibility of reserving the Google+ local pages for searches on the Google+ platform while the local graph & carousel would be used for universal searches.

Local always seems to surprise one way or another, we'll see what happens.

Ya I don't think going away totally, sorry didn't mean that.

But minimized in their display and harder to get to just as they are in new maps and carousel. And if these reviews show up in SERPs like that, then again one more reason folks will not even need to click over to the G+ L page.

Just got confirmation from Google that the review piece Andrew blogged about is a UI update and not just a test. So sounds like it's rolling out.

Re: Is Google Abandoning Local Listings?

After reading the above and going to the originating story I went over to seobythesea by Bill Slawski and read his piece from yesterday on the patent: How Google May Diversify Search Results by Merging Local and Web Search Results

    Then we spoke a little.

I think the patent went into effect a little bit ago, from my own observations. I think it describes phenomena that has been discussed in this forum a bit in various threads and posts.

From the longish perspective I think google has been dealing and confronting how to best present information on local businesses FOR YEARS. Inside the PAC and on organic results. There have been a variety of presentations. Over time they have periodically given smb sites enormous coverage of the top of the search page and at times cut it back.

This looks to me like they are cutting it back...essentially merging an organic result and local result and giving that smb one listing rather than two or three and a bigish map result. It looks to me like its been a trend.

I've had sites that dominate the top of the page results with ppc, organic results, an organic result with site links, several organic pages and or a 1 result in the PAC and organic results. I've seen plenty of others.

If you are one of those smb sites...this type of result is not as good. You'll get less clicks. The competition will do better.

    Google is big....we are small.

In that per this patent, an authoritative organic result will be merged into the PAC at times I think it indicates Local Results ARE NOT going away by a long shot.

...but clearly another change in the never ending world of how google constantly changes.!!!!!

at least that is my $0.02.
