Just as Linda already mentioned, results in terms of local SEO are starting to be a lot more difficult to track.

3. Monitor SERP Results - this is just as difficult as the other two options, SERP results are no longer clearly fixed positions, they vary by country, city, and even neighborhood, device, browser, browsing history a.o. criteria. It's almost impossible to create a measurement of all these things. In additional to that, local SEO will soon no longer be merely SERP focused, with the new Google Maps we will have to develop ways of tracking business visibility on a map (for example, few months from here we might be telling our clients something like: "your business is visible when zooming out up to a scale of X").

Hope my answer will serve as a good starting point. :)

You NAILED it with #3. Totally nailed it!
I may quote you or use those lines. So well stated and so true!

Thanks to both of you. I'm glad I checked.

The only way I see the "hide business address" is if I first select the option "travel to customers" or words to that effect. That's not untrue actually, but it's more likely her customers will come to her.

That also revealed more options for specifying the areas served more accurately, which is a bonus.

So just like Rawly said "Just uncheck the box "I serve customers at my business address". That will ensure your address wil be hidden."

However, I am not sure I set it up correctly. To attempt to do this I set myself as a contributor to my own website. For Google to verify this I had to use and verify an email address @mydomain.com, here is how it is setup below.

Did I set this up correctly for what I am looking to do?
Thanks in advance

This is an interesting thread. I understand the multiple sites vs one site argument. Personally, I think it depends on the competitiveness of the KW you are ranking for.

Please indulge this thought experiment: if one indeed does have multiple locations and each one a separate website; therefore, one could have multiple google local + pages - correct? Furthermore, if all the websites had the same IP - would this create concern for Google?

Wade, I completely redid his original listing, removed any custom categories, made sure he was an SAB with a radius location. And then I reported the issue. They came back within a couple of days to acknowledge and a couple of days again to say it was fixed.

That's when I noticed that the website was wrong! However, at least he did own the other website so I have now managed to work out how to forward. Hopefully, that will continue to work.

Marie, I have not pulled hair out but I'm sure it's going grey and I definitely have more wrinkles than when I first started doing this!

Linda, I too had thought of the bottle in the tide! I have another client who is struggling to get Google to recognise his address. His listing in our town remains on the front page but trying to rank for the county is up and down like a yoyo. One day he's there, the next day he isnt. Then he's back and then gone again. Today he seems to be ranking but he is at least beginning to understand the mercurial nature of Local. We just get so many clients who say 'But I've always ranked front page for blah in blah', what's going on and why can't you fix it!

Today, Google seems to have decided that my own business category is Computers! God knows where that has come from as I have spent the afternoon checking out my citations to see if I chose that as a category somewhere and come up empty handed. I just hope no one rings up asking for hardware advice and gives me a bad review as a result... :O

Colan, thank you - although I'm rather hoping to get off the rollercoaster and find a client who has an address that Google recognises, a store front that people can visit and five default categories that fit his products/services :)

AndyWPP, hope you can get to the bottom of it.

Hi there,Thank you for contacting Google+ Local about your business listing. It looks like the website you submitted is one of multiple official websites for your location across the Web. If multiple websites exist for your business, we will not be able to moderate your preferred website onto the business listing. If you want to ensure that your preferred website appears on the listing, you should make sure it is the only official website for your business across the Web.

The client that I was working on in this case has 2 URL's for their website. One that was created by corporate and one that he purchased at some point.

Interesting point, Nick...yeah, I guess theoretically it would work, although I'm not sure that the way to rank a Google+ page would be to get links. The mark of a popular page would be Plus shares, circles, and reviews, I would think. Links to a Plus (local) page just doesn't seem natural, and I can't see Google placing much weight on them. But all of that is just speculation on my part, obviously.

Totally agree with you Phil that building (or attracting ;)) quality links to your website should be the primary goal. Theoretically though, wouldn't it also be possible to rank a Google+ local page in the organic search by building links to it.
